THE VEDES PEAT-BOG
Home > The territory > Biotopes > The Vedes Peat-Bog
The Vedes peat-bog is a rare example of a high altitude peat-bog formed underground, with a residual lake at the centre surrounded by a furrow; a peat outcrop is penetrating into the lake, practically dividing it in two: it is a floating strip of “sphaighes” which, decomposing, forms the peat. In the biotope, apart from the wetlands, there is also a wooded part surrounding the marsh, which offers protection to the bog.
The visitors’ path
The excursion involves the biotope only marginally; the European path E5 passes across it only for a few hundred metres.
